The profession was given structure on January 20, 1950 with the creation of the Société française des chimistes cosmétologues (French society of cosmetic chemists) (Société française de cosmétologie - SFC), whose first president was M. Sabetay. Since its creation, numerous thematic conferences have been organized, favoring international exchanges and the emergence of innovations. In 1980, in Orléans, the first SFC symposium on natural substances made everybody realize how rich pharmacopeias are. Today, the SFC is a worldwide federation, and it is in charge of organizing in Paris the 28th congress of the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC).

In 1994, at the initiative of Jean Luc Ansel, Jean Arondel and Jean-Paul Guerlain, Cosmetic Valley was created. It was the first professional technopole in the field, and it was labeled “Pôle de compétitivité national” in 2005. With the support of territorial collectivities, this world-famous competitiveness pole is comprised of a network of large and small companies, research centers and training institutions all aiming at innovation and the conquest of international markets.
