Introduction to the Society

Promoting the history of human sciences

In 1986, the French Society for the History of Human Sciences (SFHSH) was created with the purpose of fostering, coordinating, and promoting all studies relating to the history and epistemology of anthropology, medicine, human and social sciences.

The range of disciplines concerned covers the entire spectrum of knowledge and skills concerning the human race, the logic of its historical evolution, and its integration in past and present culture. Confronting the tradition of an established cleavage between present day schools of thought, the SFHSH promotes rigorous documentation and the necessary dialogue between disciplines.

The orientation of the SFHSH remains generalist. Since its founding, this society has organized national and international conferences emphasizing the common cognitive, methodological, and sociological factors which have gone into the making of the human sciences. Convinced that safeguarding and accessing national archival material is one of the goals of historical research, the society has begun work promoting the value of this endeavor with administrative authorities and libraries.

In accordance with its objectives, the society intends to act as a liaison and resource among scholars. It has a network of foreign correspondents and publishes a biannual bulletin among its members communicating current events in all basic areas of the history of social and human sciences such as recent publications and doctoral theses, course offerings, conferences, professional organizations, exhibitions, and research chronicles.
